Ever wonder why June is the most popular month to get married? Well, many would say it all started with the Romans. In Roman times June became the most popular month to be married because the Roman goddess Juno was the protector of women, especially in marriage and childbearing. Therefore a wedding in June was said to be blessed with a strong marriage and a healthy family.
In medieval times many couples chose the month of June to be married because it was the month of the bride’s annual (yes, I said annual) bath. A pleasant smelling bride was sure to make the wedding night more amorous.
My favorite explanation why June is the most popular month to get married comes from the movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers where they devote an entire song to June weddings:
“Oh, they say when you marry in June
You’re a bride for all of your life, and
The bridegroom who marries in June
Gets a sweet-heart for a wife.
Winter weddings can be gay
Like a Christmas Holiday, but
The June Bride hears the song
Of a spring that lasts all summer long.
By the light of the silvery moon,
Home you ride side by side
With the echo of Mendelssohn’s tune
In your hearts as you ride.
For they say when you marry in June
You will always be a bride”
“June Bride” from the movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Swoon! (If you have never seen the movie, I highly recommend it!)
There are many reasons why you might choose the month of June to get married. The most important one should be because it’s the best time for you and your fiancee to do so!
